23 - Week 1 - "Where Were You?"

Yesterday we opened the service with a song called "Where Were You?" by Todd Agnew. This song is taken from the book of Job. Job is distraught and suffering greatly from the many losses he has experienced and the physical hardships he is enduring, and prompted by his friends decides to question God.

God doesn't answer Job's question in detail - instead he responds by asking a question, well, several questions, himself. In Chapter 38 of Job we see the beginning of God's reply to Job.

Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid the cornerstone - while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

We wanted to communicate God's awesomeness in the songs we picked out for yesterday. His awesomeness found in nature and creation. This character of God lays the groundwork for an understanding in our lives that he is not taken by surprise by tragic events in our lives. He is in control and has not abandoned us - even though we may feel that way.

So, we chose Todd Agnew's song as mentioned above. We also chose a song called "Indescribable". This song paints a great picture of God revealing himself through nature. We closed with a song called "Ocean" by Ten Shekel Shirt. The chorus of this song, again, contains the theme that the evidence of God that is contained in his creation is a reminder to us, even in the worst of times, that he is loving, powerful, faithful, and awesome.

Something about the ocean
Makes me rise up and praise
Something about the heavens
Makes me stand in awe again
Something about the sunrise
Reminds me of your faithfulness
Something about your presence
And I'm lost in love again
